Spooky Disco, School Sparkle Day and Christmas Pub Lunch

October 15, 2017

Firstly some reminders about Spooky Disco…

It’s 3.30 – 5.30pm this Friday 20 October, fancy dress is welcome (for children and parents alike) and we’d welcome any donations of spooky biscuits or cakes for sale at the tuck shop.

We ask that preschool and reception children are accompanied by an adult. If you are leaving an older child you must leave a contact number on the sign-up sheet at the door. Thank you to the parent volunteers who have signed up, we couldn’t do it without you!

Entry is £1 per child and they will want a few coins for the tuck shop too.

Secondly some info about School Sparkle Day…

The school have asked FODS to co-ordinate a tidy up of the school grounds. We’ve set the date for Saturday 28 October, just ahead of Open Day and the launch of the new classroom.

The day will run from 10am – 3pm but you can drop in when it suits, even if you only have just half hour to spare anytime, please help.

There are plenty of kid friendly jobs to do too. Please find a list of jobs compiled by the staff – you’ll need to bring some appropriate equipment along with you:

  • Extensive weeding
  • Sweeping borders and pathways
  • Emptying the pots and stacking them away
  • Cleaning leaves from the playground
  • Tidying playground sheds
  • Cleaning the outside toys and packing them away
  • Trim plants in the quiet area
  • Gutter clearing – bring a ladder!
  • Possibly move the shed (if the builders haven’t done it)
  • Possibly plant some hedgerow trees at the front of school (if the trees have arrived)
  • Collecting and disposing of rubbish in the playground
  • There may be cleaning or tidying jobs in or around the new classroom too

Please bring some eqpt to use –  e.g. trowel, fork, gardening gloves, knee rests, outside sweeping brushes, leaf scoops, cleaning cloth and spray, spade etc

We’ve also been asked to strim the overgrowth in forest school field – this job will require petrol strimmers; so no kids in this field. Please let me know if you can attend with a strimmer.

We also need a handyperson who can measure up and fit a shelf in a shed (you’ll need to find the materials too) and refit a wonky lock on another shed.

We’ll bring drinks and biscuits to help keep everyone going! Please let me know if you think you’ll most likely be there and what you would be able to help with. This is just to give us a rough idea of numbers and to see what we do and don’t have covered. No worries whatsoever if you later find you can’t make it for any reason.

Louise Lethbridge (Mum to Seb in Yr 5 and Ella in Yr 2) will be there at the start and Laura Bell (Mum in Amy in Yr 6, Luke in Yr4 and Holly in Yr 1) will be along later – please see us if you have any questions on the day! Thank you in advance for your help.

And finally…

For some years there has been a FODS Parent’s Christmas Pub Lunch but we don’t have an organiser for this year. Is there anyone who is able to do this? You would need to book a table at local pub for a week day lunchtime and then collect the menu choices and tell the pub in advance, usually about 20-30 current and past parents get involved. If you can do this please contact Laura.

Wake Up Shake Up and Latest FODS Dates

October 3, 2017

A quick FODS update…

The wake up shake up pa/speaker is broken. Mrs Neil has managed to borrow one but the school can’t keep it for long. Some of our lovely parents, Helen, Ben, Ros and Alex, are fundraising to replace it by running the Exeter half-marathon, all aiming for speedy sub two hour times!

You can donate via a collecting pot in reception or online here:…/we-love-wake-up-shake-up

Thank you very much, lets keep the kids dancing and the music playing in Diptford!

In case you missed them here are some other dates:

  • Spooky disco – Fri 20 October from 3.30 to 5.30pm. Helpers needed, sign-up online:
  • School Sparkle – Sat 28 October – save the date and join us to tidy up the school buildings and grounds, including cleaning the new classroom ready for use!

Thanks all for reading and a big thank you to Helen, Ben, Ros and Alex for their help,

Laura (

Weds 27 Sept – FODS AGM and general meeting

September 14, 2017

Our next meeting, a short AGM followed by a regular meeting, is on Weds 27 Sept at 7.30 in the Turtley Corn Mill at Avonwick.

We would very much like to welcome parents who are interested in getting involved, come along and see what we do.

It is a great way to get to know other parents and there are so many ways to help – arranging or helping out at events, preparing grant applications, sourcing raffle prizes, admin tasks (like sending off the Christmas Card artwork) and more. All help and all new ideas very welcome!

We also need a Secretary, the core responsibility is to do agendas and minutes for our meetings, of which there are approx six per year.

Please get in touch if you’d like to find out more.
