Friends of Diptford School’s next committee meeting is being held on
Wednesday 16th May at 3.30 pm at School.
New faces welcome, you don’t need to be a committee member to attend or need to stay the whole meeting (normally 1 hour). Come along and have a chat and see what we get up to.
If you would like to get involved, but are unable to attend please speak to Alison Lyon, Denise Hawkins, Paula Cox or Will Kennerley as we have a number of summer events coming up including the Horse Show where we sell ice-creams and we will need volunteers to man the stall in hour slots!.
Lynsey Goshawk is kindly hosting a “drop in any time” coffee morning next Friday 11th May so come along, bring some biscuits or cakes, whatever takes your fancy and pop along to Cobblestones, Bow Farm, Avonwick. Parking is limited so lift share where you can – so why not go straight after drop off, leave your car at school and “cadge” a lift from someone else. I would image we might be there til 11am at least so even if you need to pop off and do something after drop off, come on over after that for a social chat… no fundraising, no committee meeting, no hidden FODS event, just Lynsey fancies a catch up!
Bags2School – 25th May and Tesco Vouchers
The blue bags have arrived at school but we won’t be putting them out in the book bags until next week – a bit nearer the time. Remember though to keep hold of that linen, clothing, soft toys, handbags, belts and shoes and don’t take it to the charity shop.. put it in a Bags2School bag and earn money for the School. Please remember to mention this to relatives and friends as well as all donations are welcome. We get paid by weight so shoes (especially men’s pairs!) are great as they are nice and heavy. Take this opportunity to have a clear out for the summer!!!
Also don’t forget to hand in all those supermarket vouchers as well. School collects tesco and pre-school collects Sainsbury’s – but you can leave both of them in the school office.
Further to Tony’s newsletter of yesterday a catch up note to everyone that the School Tidy Up day has been postponed to later this term, date yet to be set. The weather forecast for sunday is very poor and after the clean up by the school cleaners during the holidays there wasn’t quite so much to do right now. So we will give the school a summer as opposed to spring clean and by doing it much later we can hopefully make it a school social as well and have a BBQ when the weather is a bit warmer!
We’ve also had a request from Sue Franklin who helps organise the Gymkhana to put out a call for volunteers to help a little with the show on Sunday 27th May at Avonwick. If you are good at directing traffic for parking, or lifting and setting up then they could do with a bit of help. The Horse show committee are always very generous in donations to FODS so we like to show them a lot of support – call Sue on 01548 821348 if you can spare a couple of hours to help.

Meeting tonight for Diptford Arms Dads – Avon Inn
Hi just a short note to say that a group of dads are meeting tonight at the Avon Inn at 8pm for a pint, chat and OK a bit of organising for the Diptford Arms event on the 19th May. This is open to all dads and for many it will be their first time! Please do go along if you have the time and meet some other dads and the more that go then the tasks to do will seem less. Thanks in advance as we are hoping to make this the biggest Diptford Arms ever! Mike Cox is chair as such but all pitch in and share a ride if you can!
Harberton Village Fun Day CANCELLED – other bits too
Hi everyone, just to let you know that the organisers of the Harberton Village Sports Family Fun Day decided yesterday to cancel saturdays intended event due to the poor weather forecast. It’s on a playing field so even if it’s not terrible itself on saturday the amount of rain we are due over the next few days is not likely to make it much fun and it could become a mud bath instead! Alice Faulkner is going to finish her Splat the Rat construction anyway so expect to see it at another event.
Watch this space though for an update on the school tidy up day -proposed as Sunday 29th April – as its possible that might be moved as well to a later summer date .. not sure yet but watch this space to make sure.
Reminder Supermarket Vouchers – School itself is collecting Tesco vouchers and Pre-school Sainsbury’s so get all the family members to collect these vouchers and bring them into school.

The Harberton Village Fun Day is on Saturday 21st April 2-5pm and FODS will be doing a Splat the Rat game and Wellie Wangin. Alice Faulkner is kindly making the Splat the Rat game from scrath so that we can add that to FODS stock for future events which is great but we need someone with needlework/sewing skills (which I definatley don’t have!!) to make up 3 rats to be splatted!!! All sorts of elaborations are possible as the rats are simple rodent shaped bean bags with little ratty faces sewn on along with whiskers and a tail. They obviously need to be heavy enough to drop nicely and quite strongly through the drainpipe made due to the demands of their trade! Spending half your time being splatted is not the the job for fancy rats or those coming apart at the seams!
We need 3 rats as the rat dropper drops the rats one after the other down the drainpipe. The width of the drainpipe is only 2 and half inches so they are quite narrow but need weight so they speed down the drainpipe (old socks or tights are the usual material!)
If you don’t know what splat the rat is take a look on google images – contestants have to try to judge when a rat is coming and splat it with a stick or bat as it drops out of the pipe pinning it against a board.
If you are able to help out on one of the games for an hour or even just half an hour on saturday that would be great as well. Let me know if you can help with either request. Hope holidays all going well and see you all next tuesday. Many thanks Denise
