FODS Newsletter July 2011

Events since the last newsletter:

Diptford Horseshow and Gymkana – 29thMay  Despite the rather damp conditions the show was well attended and all participants seemed to have great fun. We sold ice-creams and together with the very kind donation post show from the Horse Show Committee we boosted our FODS funds by £300! Thanks to Alison Lyon for the loan of the freezer on the day and to all those who did a stint selling.

Diptford Village Fete – 4thJune – FODS provided face painting, guess the number of sweets in the jar (kindly donated by Cranches of Totnes) and Name the Teds (winning names, Ruby (Grace Parnell)) and Stanley (Sue Franklin). Thanks to Lisa and Sammy for face painting all afternoon,  Lynsey for manning the stall and all who visited our stall and contributed to our fundraising efforts.

Sports Day -30th June : thanks once again to the staff who enabled this to happen on what was the national teachers strike day!. Great team and individual performances by the children and after their exertions on the playing field,  FODS provided them with much need squash and ice-creams. For the watching families and friends we sold cream teas and other cakes –although next year we will try and make sure we are outside with everyone else so we can join in the fun – thank you to all those who ran the refreshments inside on the day. Class 3 children had laid on some activity stalls to demonstrate their own money raising skills, like Penalty Shoot Out, Face Painting, Lucky Dip, Name the Teddy and “Throw a Wet Sponge at a teacher”. This last stall unsurprisingly did require the kind natured support of a teacher! Amazingly the children raised £123.03 for FODS from these stalls, which is a fantastic achievement- a great thanks to all of them!

Social Gathering: On 9th July, FODS decided to have a family social evening at the Avon Inn when they were having their Cider, Hog Roast and Music evening. Even though we started early at 6.30pm, we all ended up staying later than planned despite the chilly weather as the children were enjoying the music and running around in the garden. It gave us adults some great time to enjoy the lovely hog roast, a few stiff drinks and to get a chance to chat to each other properly for a change as well as to meet the “other halves”.  Great evening! Do you fancy doing it again sometime?

Troy Story – 14th July WOW! What an historical treat! It had to be one of the funniest and most enjoyable productions of late and the performers were all fantastic, with some very funny moments. Well done to the excellent production team and, of course, the children.  How are they going to beat that next year! FODS offered some drinks prior to the evening performance and that seemed to be appreciated! Thanks to all who donated to our Pimms offering!

Our 100 Club balls for the month were also drawn at the event and congratulations to our 3 winners £50 Harris; £25 Wild; £10 Perkins.

Diptford Flower Show 16thJuly:  FODS ran a BBQ at the event, thanks goes to the playing field committee for the loan of the BBQ itself! The local Riverford Farm Home Delivery Franchisee Martin Emmett (01803 732786 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              01803 732786     end_of_the_skype_highlighting martinemmett@riverfordhomedelivery.co.uk) kindly subsidised the meat this year and with the tempting Riverford Farm burgers and sausages on offer to the shows stall holders and visitors we had asuccessful day.  Doing the BBQ is hard work for our volunteers and the work put in by Fiona Savery, Alison Lyon, Paula Cox, Lynsey Humphry and Kate Morris and their other halves is very very much appreciated. A great deal of thanks goes out to them. We will have raised around £200 from this event alone, which is great considering the weather!

Peter Moore’s Dart River Swim – 17thJuly: we then have the amazing Mr Moore’s swim for 5 miles down the River Dart, incredible! Congratulations to him for doing it in under 3 hours, let alone just doing it at all. Thanks very much to him for raising funds through sponsorship for FODS and outdoor learning resources and to all those who sponsored him!

Forthcoming Events:

Nearly New Sale – 24thSeptember  2011

You should all have received a separate note from us about this big event, so I won’t repeat it all here but ensure it’s in the diary!  South Brent Village hall 10am til 12.  More information can be found on the Nearly New Sale page on this website.

Parents have priority on the tables until 22nd July so get in early!  WE WILL NEED LOTS OF HELPERS AS WELL so please do consider donating your kids old clothes and two hours of your time on the day!

Apple Pressing – 9thOctober 2011 – We have booked the press and we might need someone with a tow bar to go and collect it for us –please contact Paula Cox at pj.mc@tesco.net if you can help there! We will be holding a steering meeting on the event in September as this will need some co-ordination but it is such great fun for the children and a chance to make use of the schools facilities and local orchards! In the mean time put the date in your diaries as well!

Bags 2 School – 7th November 2011: just heads up that we will do another one of these as it’s been an easy fundraiser for us. This time we will try to involve the whole village of Diptford to see how much we can gather! Hold on to those heavy shoes, belts and handbags until we need them in our Bags 2 School. Remember they pay by weight!

Other News:

The Field: Devon County Council, on behalf of the school, are still waiting to exchange and complete on the purchase of the field.  We hope that this will be finalised shortly and FODS has done everything it needs to in terms of its donation.

100 Club: A great fundraiser for the school and a chance to win a monetary sum with odds better than the National Lottery for £5 a month or £60 a year.  Forms in the school office or can be found on the FODS page of  the school website

Uniform .  The new order form is available in the office and on the School Web-site. You will find it under its temporary home on the Communications tab and you need to scroll down and find it under the holiday dates information. Hopefully you can access that whenever you think at home to order the new bits. Things we have added are PE/Swim bags (with school logo and name block details) and cotton navy shorts.

Summer Holidays and a huge thank you!

A final word to say thanks to all those who have helped during the year, cake making, face painting, tea serving, selling and making things, ordering uniform, swimming in open water and of course those that give generously to all our fundraising efforts.  Hope you all have a good holiday with the children and that we get some good weather so we can go to the beach!  Next term looks busy already with the Nearly New Sale and the Apple Pressing but we will make sure we do some fun things for the children as well next term.
